Andy Cropper – Uncertain Spaces: Spirits of Place and Foreshadowing

 July to October 2020

Andy is a realist painter living in Sheffield. His work shows night scenes discovered through urban explorations within the city.

Some paintings are recognisable locations. Others seem to depict generic spaces that could be found in any urban location. The paintings record mysterious and uncanny atmospheres existing within ordinary and often overlooked areas of city life.

The emptiness in the paintings provides an uncertain space for the viewer’s perceptions in which some my find peace, others may experience it as loneliness. Unexpectedly, the paintings foreshadowed the effects of the recent COVID-19 lockdown and the deserted streets of Sheffield.
