Michael Brennand-Wood is a visual artist, curator, lecturer and arts consultant. He is internationally regarded as one of the most innovative and inspiring artists working in textiles and is part of the 62 Group of Textile Artists. Michael has held exhibitions and taught all over the world since the 70’s and he is renowned in his field for his bold, colourful and innovative approach to textiles. Examples of his work can be seen in major public, corporate and private collections worldwide including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

However, Michael isn’t limited to textiles. Recent work has made use of computerized machine embroidery, acrylic paint, photography and collage, as well as LEGO® bricks. Exploring the illusionary space between two and three dimensions, these works are colourful, dramatic, rhythmic and holographic in feel with intense detail that merges at a distance into strongly optical configurations.

For Brick by Brick, Michael has created four abstract pieces using a wide variety of LEGO® brick shapes and sizes to construct an intricate and multi-layered assemblage with incredible attention to detail. The pieces have the feel of richly detailed applique, with elements incorporated in surprising ways.
