Project Lead for New Wave 2024 – Heritage Open Days

20-21 Visual Arts Centre is looking to contract a Project Lead, aged 18 to 25, to deliver and implement New Wave, a grant funded project aimed at engaging young people from North Lincolnshire. The successful candidate will develop a programme of engagement opportunities that collaborates with young people, to co-create events that celebrate this year’s Heritage Open Days.

The Project Lead will work 37 hours between June and September 2024.

What is New Wave?

New Wave is guided by three key themes:

  • Learning from others – encourage and support participants to find examples of past events that have successfully engaged young people, both in the cultural sector and beyond. New Wave aims to learn from and build upon the previous work that has been done in this area.
  • Understanding our audience – New Wave focuses heavily on utilising audience data to inform and guide our approach. The project aims to build an in-depth understanding of the motivations, aspirations, and barriers when it comes to youth engagement in the cultural sector.
  • Co-creation and collaboration – New Wave is about producing events working directly with young adults. Our participants are supported and encouraged to work with this target audience to plan, promote, and deliver their events.

New Wave enables organisations to develop and deliver an event in collaboration with young people (18-25) during Heritage Open Days 2024 (6-15 September) aimed at attracting and engaging younger audiences with the festival. The event may build on your previous work of the organisation or could be something completely new. Regardless, it aims to push the boundaries of the types of activities that the organisation have delivered in the past, and help you connect with audiences currently under-represented. A key aspect of New Wave is the importance of producing events with and not just for young people. Consequently, throughout the process organisations will consult and collaborate with individuals within the New Wave target age group.

 About 20-21 Visual Arts Centre

20-21 Visual Arts Centre (20-21) has a 20-year track record of showing established and emerging artists, representing the breadth of creative talent from the UK and abroad. We show underrepresented popular art forms and support artists who may consider themselves an outsider (to the mainstream art world) but whose work encapsulates the diversity of contemporary England and exposes the barriers that are faced by many artists.

20-21 also has a reputation for developing and exhibiting accessible exhibitions targeted at children and families. We also present established artists to North Lincolnshire, recognising that it may be the first time many residents will have seen such well-known work e.g, Antony Gormley, Bansky, Grayson Perry and Damien Hirst.

Why are we doing this?

Over the years, the Heritage Open Days have evolved from just opening doors to encompassing a wide range of innovative and dynamic events. 20-21 Visual Arts Centre was successful in their application to the New Wave project and regularly takes part in the programme. 20-21’s participation in New Wave seeks to deliver high-quality events that push the boundaries of what people expect of us, widening the appeal at 20-21 to audience groups that we have previously struggled to reach.

20-21 Visual Arts Centre regularly captures audience data through surveys and evaluation. Recent survey results have indicated that 20-21’s visitors, aged 18-25, are the least engaged and visit less frequently. The project aims to change all that. We would like to make 20-21 as accessible to young people as possible with the New Wave project leading the way.
